About the project

Welcome to the official web site of the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art!

The State Museum of Contemporary Art, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Greece, is organizing the 1st Biennale of Contemporary Art on the 21st of May until the 30 th of September 2007.

This international initiative by the Ministry of Culture aims to place Thessaloniki and the entire country in general, into the Biennale art network.

Under the general title of "Heterotopias", the main body of the exhibitions and the artistic activities is accompanied by a series of parallel events, embracing a wide range of the artistic creation. The objective of this project is the public's familiarization and participation with the current art scene, thus providing the audience with a convenient and friendly access to spaces which are not restricted to the museum's walls.

The Thessaloniki Biennale:

  • Promotes works of art to the European artistic scene that provide new, daring and innovative aesthetic proposals, which encourage artistic dialogue.
  • Facilitates the artists' access into the European artistic scene.
  • Seeks to further the artists' communication among different countries.
  • Focuses its interest on critical international events and worldwide crisis that affect the individual and his/her environment.
  • Creates bonds with the European as well as other existent artistic institutions with the ambition of broadening their artistic exchange.
  • Incorporates the Greek artistic scene into a motivating field of aesthetic dialogue beyond European borders.
  • Collaborates with all the cultural institutions of Thessaloniki and expands to a number of different sites of the city.
