Vanguard
The avant-garde or vanguard is the foremost division of an advancing military formation. Its medieval precursor was called Forlorn Hope. This metaphor was both “unfortunate” and accurate, pointing out the fact that the members of the vanguard were naturally and by definition set apart from the rest of the army. The Vanguard exhibition oscillates between the metaphorical and literal use of the word “vanguard,” between a distinct historical category and a specific tactic of warfare. Presenting the work of modern artists, the exhibition attempts to identify the metaphorical and ideological connotations this word has today. Participating artists: Tom Crawford, Marcelo de Melo, Mathis Gasser, Patrick Goddard, Natalija Gormalova, Alexandros Kaklamanos, Evariste Maiga, Panos Mattheou, Steven Morgana, Bijan Moosavi, Amy Palaiogiannidou, Gilbert Richards.
