Concert by Galina Chistiakova at the Museum of Byzantine Culture

A programme with the works by Russian composers of the 20th century (Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Sedrin, Scriabin, Stravinsky) is going to be presented in one’s person concert on July 12th at 21:00, by the piano artist Galina Chistiakova.

The concert is organized under the framework of the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art and is going to take place in the atrium of the Museum of Byzantine Culture in an aesthetic dialogue with Vadim Zakharov’s installation “Black Birds”.
The young pianist from Russia is going to present to the public of Thessaloniki few of the most important masterpieces of the piano artistry of the 20th century, exploiting the variety of each of the composers’ style that she has chose to present. Her concert will cover works that Shostakovich and Sedrin have dedicated to children and works that reached the climax of the music revolution that was presented at the end of the 20th century by Sergey Dyagilev in Paris, as well as the celebrated ‘Petrouska’ by Stravinsky. Moreover, the concert will cover the ‘dark’ “Illusions” by Prokofiev, as well as his renowned masterpiece “Montecchi i Capuleti”.  In addition, this concert wouldn’t be as magnificent if it wasn’t presenting the work of A. Scriabin, one of the most eminent Russian composers whose work gave the signal to the repertoire of music for piano.
Galina Chistiakova was born in Moscow and since she was eleven years old, she started playing the piano on several stages of the most significant concert halls of the world.  She has performed as a soloist (solo or with an orchestra) in France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Finland, Czech Republic, Munich, Japan and many more.  She is the student of the distinguished Russian piano player Mikhail Voskresensky and she has received several distinctions in national competitions in Russia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ukraine and many more.
This is going to be Galina Chistiakova’s first appearance in Thessaloniki, which is considered to be an important event for her, a personal and spiritual exploitation, a return to her roots in a way, since her ancestors had migrated from Thessaloniki to Russia, relatively recently, during the Interwar period.

Invitation to the openings of the installation "Pila" (Saw)

Filippov has created a giant saw that slices the earth from within - an image of unappeasable fate inflicting wounds on humanity, like geological faults. Only here the hand of fate does not strike from above, where people are used to expecting it, but from the depths, from the "roots" - a dangerous concept that can lead to political earthquakes.

Invitation to the openings of the exhibition "Tout doit disparaître! (Everything must go!)

INSTALLATION ‘TOUT DOIT DISPARAITRE’
The work of the French artist Jean-François Boclé “Tout doit disparaître” and ‘Tu me copieras’ is presented in the French Institute, under the framework of the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. It is an installation consisting of a hundreds of plastic blue bags and a videoprojection.

The work of Jean-François Boclé is polysemic – one might even say polyphonic. The installation Tout doit disparaître! (Everything must go!) evokes the memory of millions of human beings cast into the depths during the long transatlantic voyage, or sold as commodities and now erased from history. The immediacy of this evocation coincides with a highly contemporary image of our own societies.  These plastic bags, ‘objects evoking both exchange and loss, form the archaeology of a mercantile present, summoning up those herded together in sorting centres, tied to airplane seats in planes about to take off, clandestine and erased, defeated by voyages and shipwrecks’.
Jean-François Boclé

Curated by: Jan-Erik Lundström

In cooperation with the French Institute of Thessaloniki.
From July 11 till September 30th at the French Institute exhibition venue.

Opening of the 3rd Children's Biennale

Opening: 24th April, 20:30
Venue: Gallery of the Society of Macedonian Studies
Duration of Exhibition: 25th April-17th June 2007

The State Museum of Contemporary Art certainly would never intend to leave out from its programme our ‘little friends’ and within this framework it embraces the 3rd Children’s Biennale within the parallel programme of the Biennale. The opening is planed for Wednesday, April 25th, at 20:30, in the gallery of the Society of Macedonian Studies (Nik. Germanou 4 Str.) and the event will last until the 17th of June. Since 2000 and every 2 years, the Museum and the Academy of Children’s Art in Xanthi have been organizing and presenting the International Biennale of Children’s Art.  On behalf of this year’s Biennale, children from 4-17 years-old from all around the world were invited to create works of art based on the theme of ancient Greek philosophy and geometry.  This initiative for children’s creativity was inspired by a reference that Plato once made on real art.  More precisely, Plato stated that “real art is created by geometrical shapes and lucid colors”.  Therefore, based on this concept and guided by their love and the capacity of their imagination, the children of the world created masterpieces. Through geometrical shapes and lines, abstract and symbolical images, in tones of two or three basic colors, the children’s works of art render concepts that can be found in every model of creativity, writing and numbers.  Consequently, without their parents’ or teachers’ guidance, the children depicted a part of the reality that surrounds them in order to share it with us. This genuine artistic activity is embraced by the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale which places it among its parallel program of activities of the 3rd Children’s Biennale.

Public Screen - Call for Artists

Public Screen - Call for Artists

In the need to address the concept of “heterotopias” under today’s terms within contemporary societies, the Public Screen project attempts to redefine the relationship between contemporary art and the public-urban space. Does contemporary art presuppose particular codes of communication and access? Does it constitute an heterotopia which is limited to the restricted space of museums and galleries? Is it possible for a creative dialogue to emerge between the work of art that is presented in a public screen and the resident/visitor/wayfarer of a modern metropolis to be produced? How can the terms of such an encounter be modified when the work of art has lost its initial physical form and exists as a representation, depiction, notion, or a reminder? In the modern globalized market, the manner in which works of art are produced and distributed has certainly changed, nevertheless, it has never stopped being a process of an economic nature in which the artists and the consumers have diverse potentials of access. The introduction of the work of art into a public space redefines the terms of communion between the artist, the work of art and the audience. In an era in which the image is the primary means of communication and transmission of ideas, the Public Screen project provides the artists from all around the world the chance to present their work to a wide range of social groups, in addition to the limited number of museum and gallery visitors.

The Public Screen program originates from and ends up in a specific area – in Thessaloniki – in the framework of an international event -of the first Biennale of Thessaloniki- with the intention of bringing together and presenting works of art, in selected, outdoor spaces throughout the city, which utilize the mediums of photography or video.

The invitation to those who are interested to participate, does not have a specific thematic limitation. The locations which are defined by Foucault as heterotopias have the potential to function as a thematic inspiration, without taking away each artist’s personal interpretation/statement of heterotopias. In the text titled “Des Espaces Autres-Heterotopies” Michel Foucault identifies heterotopias as real places as opposed to utopias that constitute locations without an actual place, an ideal version of society or a reversal of actual places. The heterotopias are functional places, within the societies, with explicit, established principles as well as rules for access and transit. As examples of such spaces, the author uses cemeteries, psychiatric institutions, prisons, nursing homes, gardens, museums, libraries, record offices, as well as festivals, Turkish baths, cinemas, brothels, colonies and ships; according to the author, the later ones are considered as the major aspects of heterotopias. Heterotopias are associated with the concept of time in complicated ways. In certain cases, such as in museums and libraries, time is accumulated endlessly, while in festivals, time has a recursive appearance.

Using the Internet, the Public Screen program appeals to the universal artistic community.

The invitation to those who are interested in participating in the event will be posted on the Biennale’s web site in Greek and in English at the. It will also appear on international network hubs. The proposals must be submited through mail until the 30th of May 2007. You may send photographs through email.
