-International Workshop for Young Artists

In the framework of the 1st Biennale of Thessaloniki which bears the title of ‘Heterotopias’, a workshop is about to take place with a participation of 18 artists from 7 countries (Iran, Armenia, France, Russia, Finland, Palestine, Greece). The workshop functions as a meeting point for communication and collaboration among the artistic creation which embraces various cultural, national and historical references.

The project will go on between the 7th and the 21th of May in a space which has been assigned by the Municipality of Thermis -previous merchandise center- while works of art which are going to be produced in situ will be later on exhibited at the atrium and a gallery space of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (22.5-30.6).

The curator’s intention is to promote the idea/concept of Heterotopias as a critical implement of dialogue between contemporary and ancient cultural models, as also as a means of investigating the affiliations between the production and presentation of the works of art in specific museum spaces which determine their own autonomous system of access and interpretation of art. Additionally, more advanced stances and perspectives guide the museum’s operation. Likewise significant establishments, such as Biennales are arranged on the basis of specific rules of access. Is it an accomplished and indisputable model or it can be abolished? What is the role of the new Biennales that take place everywhere in the world in relation to the production and the expansion of contemporary art or the trade of art?
The workshop is constructed on the dialogue between the city of Thessaloniki and its different sites, the urban and natural landscapes as well as on the artists who will travel from all around the world to create and exhibit their works in this Biennale. The artists that are participating are invited to take a stance towards history and the current reality. Diversity and personal experiences are the prerequisites for a creative dialogue and artistic expression.
